Wednesday, June 2 is National Running Day. If you’re interested in adding running to your fitness routine try these “games” courtesy of Running World.
Leave your watch behind
This prediction run approach can teach you how to run consistently without checking your watch all the time. Run your normal or a new route and predict how long it will take you to finish. Check your time afterward and keep track of your progress. You can even turn this into a friendly competition—the closest prediction among friends can earn a prize.
Leap Frog Run
In a physically-distanced group, run single file at an easy pace after a warmup of a few miles. The person in the back of the line picks up the pace and runs to the front (no sprinting) every one or two minutes. You can do this for 10 minutes at a time or for the whole run.
I Spy
Pick an item you’re likely to see frequently during your run: a red traffic light or stop sign, your favorite spring flower, a barking dog. When you see your item of choice, pick up your pace for 10 to 60 seconds, walk for one minute, then start spying again. If your running with a group the first person to call out your item could run a normal pace while everyone else has to sprint ahead. The more people you have on this run, the quicker your reaction will have to be.
We have fitness specialists to provide guidance and support as you learn to run more effectively. Visit the Member Services desk for more information.
