July is Tour De France Month. Each year thousands of athletes compete in the multiple stage bicycle race. Cycling is a great option to add to your fitness routine that’s fun and effective. Here are three major benefits of cycling:
Low Impact Workout
If you’re looking for a low impact workout that’s easy on your joints, cycling is a great option. When you sit on a bike, you put your weight on a pair of bones in the pelvis called the ischial tuberosities, unlike walking, when you put your weight on your legs (Letter, 2016). Cycling is a great workout for all ages, causing less strain and injuries than other forms of exercise.
It’s Good for Your Heart, Blood and Lungs
Cycling is mainly an aerobic workout. You will breathe deeper, sweat and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level. Aerobic exercise also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals (Letter, 2016).
Build Muscle and Maintain Weight
Combined with a healthy diet, cycling will build muscle and burn body fat. You can complete a low- or high-intensity workout that increases muscle strength and flexibility. Cycling will help build your leg, calf, arm and shoulder muscles.
Cycling is easy to fit into your exercise routine and is not limited to the equipment at the gym. You can cycle to work, with your family, to school and more. Wear protective gear such as a helmet, especially when cycling outdoors. Consider adding cycling to your routine today.
