In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services named September as National Yoga Month. The purpose of this month is to provide information about the health benefits of yoga and to inspire a healthy lifestyle. If you have been thinking about adding yoga to your fitness routine, here are three major benefits to consider:
Yoga will boost your overall fitness
According to Harvard Health Publications, “Practicing yoga a couple times a week increases muscle strength and flexibility, boosts endurance, and tunes up your heart, lungs and blood vessels (Publications, 2015).
Yoga can help you reduce stress
Yoga helps you take your mind off the events happening in your day and focus on connecting with your mind and body. Using specific breathing patterns (called pranayama in yoga) helps your mind and body to relax (Court, 2017).
Yoga will help you get a good night’s sleep
Regular yoga practice helps with insomnia or abnormal sleeping habits. Yoga helps you to unwind at the end of the day and get better sleep at night.
