Follow these three tricks of the trade to fight those junk food cravings when you’re stuck at home:
Can’t get to the grocery store often? Purchase frozen fruits and veggies, so you can store them in your freezer for days, weeks, months or longer — until hunger strikes. Some frozen produce even has a higher quantity of particular nutrients than “fresh” produce.
Squash, lentils, protein powders and eggs — yes, eggs! — are perfect examples of foods that last awhile and are packed with nutrients. Squash lasts several months. Lentils are non-perishable. Eggs have a five-week shelf life, and protein powders can be stored for over a year* (depending on the ingredients).
When you plan your meals a few weeks ahead of time, you are able to purchase ingredients that can be used in several dishes. For example, frozen broccoli can be used in a healthy, hearty family casserole, salad and stir fry. Plus, this technique can save you money because it decreases your food waste.
