We all know that fitness is even better with friends. Here’s a list of workouts that are beneficial for you and your dog.
Walking
Experience the benefits of a stronger heart, lower blood pressure, more energy, denser bones, and a lower risk of depression. For your furry friend, walking can reduce common behavior problems, burn calories to reduce obesity, promote joint health and support digestive and urinary health. Aim for 30 minute walks at least 5 days per week.
Dancing
Have a dance party with your pooch. Similar to walking, dancing can provide a calorie burning aerobic workout for you and your dog. You’ll both develop greater stamina, better balance, lower blood pressure, and improved muscle tone and bone density.
Frisbee® and Fetch
These classic games for you and your pup also provide fun workouts. Burn calories in your front yard or in friendly competitions.
Soccer
Soccer-style exercise balls for dogs are made of hard plastic and come in different sizes to suit your particular breed. You kick the ball, and your dog tries to pass it back with their nose or paws.
Get started by having your vet evaluate your dog to determine if your dog may need a low-impact exercise plan. Establish a workout routine for your dog’s needs. Start with a short-term goal of exercising just five or 10 minutes every day. Working breeds and young dogs usually need a lot of exercise. Keep in mind that deep-chested breeds, such as Danes or Doberman pinschers, may be at higher risk than other dogs of developing a serious condition called “bloat” or gastric dilation-volvulus (GDV). Incorporate rest days for you and your dog and avoid heat exhaustion.
